Race Relations Day 2017

Celebrating Race Relations Day in our school

Race Relations Day is a time to reflect on our journey towards being a culturally diverse and inclusive nation.

Turangawaewae

This is a Maori concept - tÅ«ranga (standing place), waewae (feet), so translated it means 'a place to stand.

TÅ«rangawaewae are places where we feel especially empowered and connected. They are our foundation, our place in the world, our home

Some questions to talk about with your class - maybe post your comments for others to read:-
  • Think about where your turangawaewae is.
  • Draw something that you identify with this place.
  • What is the importance of having a place to belong.
  • Does NZ create that feeling for everyone? Why/Why not?
  • How can we do better?

Holi - Festival of Colours celebrations

Friday is Holi - Festival of Colours - for our Hindu families.

Holi is celebrated by throwing coloured water and powders over friends and family.

Friends of Mrs Pinto celebrating last weekend at the Hare Krishna Temple in Kumeu

People throw colours over each other regardless of being young, old, rich, poor, teacher, student, employer and employee!

Holi is a time when people and nature throw off the gloom of winter and rejoice in the colours and liveliness of spring. For Hindu living in New Zealand this festival falls in our summer.
